Great Plains SPCA is raising money for a dog shot in the face
The Great Plains SPCA is raising money to pay for medical treatment for a dog that needed emergency surgery after being shot in the face.
The wounded dog, named Echo, was dropped off at the organization’s Independence shelter on Monday, said Rachel Hodges, chief communications officer for the Great Plains SPCA.
His injury required surgery, which was performed by BluePearl Veterinary Partners.
“Thankfully it missed his eyeball,” Hodges said. “It missed his nasal cavity. So it just barely missed all the crucial parts within the skull.”
The surgery was successful. However, it cost $2,500 to $2,700, and the shelter is looking to raise money to cover the dog’s current and future medical costs, Hodges said.
“We haven’t reached that amount of donations yet from Facebook, so we are hoping that between today and tomorrow we can cross that and get the community to help us with all of his medical costs,” Hodges said. “There could be some more in the future, but it looks like he has a pretty positive prognosis at this point.”
To donate, go to the Great Plains website at www.greatplainsspca.org. To make a gift by mail, send a check made out to Great Plains SPCA to 5428 Antioch Drive, Merriam, KS 66202.

Echo is a 1-year-old hound mixed with Dogue de Bordeaux.
Previously, Echo was a shelter dog that had been adopted out by Great Plains. The shelter’s staff has been in contact with the owner to determine how Echo was injured.
“He’s got a lot of recovery to do,” Hodges said.
