Blue Valley Northwest student mourned after fatal car wreck

Counseling support was in place Thursday at Blue Valley Northwest High School for students affected by the death of another student in a Wednesday afternoon traffic crash.

Blake Rohrer, a 16-year-old junior at the school, was killed when his car crashed in the area of 175th Street and Switzer Road. The cause of the crash is still under investigation by Overland Park police.

In a letter to Blue Valley Northwest families Wednesday night, Principal Amy Murphy, expressed condolences to Blake’s family.

“We know that many staff and students will be affected by this news because Blake was an active member in several Northwest activities including choir,” Murphy said.

The choir room at the school at 132nd and Switzer was opened Wednesday night and crisis teams were available to meet with students.

Murphy said parents should encourage their children to express their feelings as they work through their grief.

District spokeswoman Kaci Brutto said Thursday that counseling resources would remain in place for as long as they were needed.
