Dog dies in Overland Park house fire believed to have been caused by careless smoking

A dog died and one person suffered minor smoke inhalation in a fire Monday night at a southern Overland Park house.

Investigators believe that careless smoking is to blame for the fire that was reported just after 9 p.m. in the 15000 block of Horton Street. The exact cause is under investigation.

Firefighters from the Overland Park and Leawood fire departments responded to the fire. The first arriving fire crews reported smoke coming from the two-story house, which was being evacuated.

Two dogs were also in the home. One of the dogs made it out safely, but the other perished. A woman was treated at the scene for minor smoke inhalation.

Firefighters quickly found and extinguished the fire, which was in an upstairs bedroom. Fire damage was limited to the bedroom, but the rest of the house sustained significant smoke damage throughout. The resident was staying with neighbors.

The Overland Park Fire Department reminded people to smoke outside and to completely extinguish smoking materials in sand or water before discarding.
