The end is near for the Johnson County Gateway project, and the Kansas Department of Transportation will celebrate with a ribbon cutting Tuesday.

The celebration, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Hotel at 12601 W. 95th Street in Lenexa, marks the substantial completion of the Johnson County Gateway Phase 2 project at the Interstate 435/Interstate 35/Kansas 10 interchange. The project has been under construction for 2  1/2 years.

“We have some things opening up later this week, but by next week, everything will be fully open,” said Kimberly Qualls, a spokeswoman for the Kansas Department of Transportation.

“There will be some finishing work and cleanup work that we will be doing, but there will be no significant closures once we get past next week.”

The remaining pieces to open include a lane on both eastbound and westbound I-435 as well as the flyover ramps fully opening to two lanes, she said.
