Patient dies when ambulance crashes, overturns along I-49 near Harrisonville
The driver of an ambulance headed to the Kansas City VA Medical Center lost control and crashed in heavy rain Wednesday night along Interstate 49. The patient being transported died in the crash.
The Missouri Highway Patrol identified the victim as Shelby N. Brandt, 65 of Nevada, Mo.
The Vernon County ambulance was northbound on I-49 just north of Harrisonville about 11:30 p.m. when its back end started sliding on wet pavement, said Sgt. Bill Lowe, a spokesman for the Missouri Highway Patrol.
The ambulance ran off the right side of the road, overturned and came to rest on its roof in a ditch.
A 23-year-old paramedic in the back with Brandt suffered serious injuries. The 25-year-old driver suffered minor injuries. Both work for the Vernon County Ambulance District.
