The Kansas City Zoo’s cold-climate penguins have been off-exhibit for more than a week due to a problem with their $15 million exhibit, which opened just 17 months ago.
A bonding agent in the material that makes up the artificial ice shelf in the exhibit failed, causing it to chip and break off. The contractor applied a new agent, which had to cure for 10 days. Once the cold pool is cleaned by divers, the penguins can go back on display early next week, zoo officials said.
Zoo Director Randy Wisthoff said the exhibit is still under warranty.
The zoo’s warm-climate Humboldt penguins remain on display.
