Wrongly imprisoned for decades, Darryl Burton now set to preach in Leawood on forgiveness
Imprisoned for decades for a 1984 killing at an Amoco station and released in 2008 after courts found his prosecution had been constitutionally flawed, Darryl Burton is set to preach this weekend about his story, and about hope and forgiveness.
Burton, who graduated from seminary in May and is pursuing his ordination in the United Methodist Church, will speak at the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in sermons on Saturday and Sunday.
Last year, the Star profiled his release from prison and how his faith guided him while he was locked up and since.
In that article, which you can read here, Burton said he developed a newfound faith and gratitude for a team of people who believed in him and led him “from the pit to the pulpit.”
That journey to the ministry came as Burton said he learned to emerge from his experience without spite over what landed him in prison.
“If I hadn’t forgiven them,” he said in last year’s story, “I would still be in prison. A spiritual prison.”
Burton will deliver his sermons at the church’s Leawood location, 13720 Roe Avenue, at 5 p.m. Saturday, 7:45 a.m, 9 a.m., 10:45 a.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday. The last two sermons Sunday will be carried live on the church’s website.
