Firefighters quickly extinguish small fire in basement of Merriam house
No one was injured when a fire started in the ceiling of a basement bathroom of a Merriam house early Wednesday.
The fire was reported about 4 a.m. at a house in the 6000 block of Hemlock Street.
When firefighters arrived, they found a small fire in the basement of the single-story house. The firefighters from Overland Park and Johnson County Consolidated Fire District No. 2 quickly extinguished the fire and contained the damage to the ceiling above the bathroom.
Investigators think the fire was electrical, although the exact cause is still under investigation. The homeowner reported hearing thunder and seeing lightning late last night.
