CDC scores 2 Kansas counties at a high COVID community level, another 2 at medium
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports two Kansas counties — Greeley and Wichita — are experiencing a high COVID-19 community level this week.
Two other counties, Sheridan and Stevens, are at medium, and the remaining counties are all at low, including Sedgwick County.
The CDC updates the metric each Thursday for U.S. counties and bases the assessment on the number of new cases and hospitalizations per 100,000 people (seven-day totals) and the percent of staffed hospital beds occupied by COVID-positive patients (a seven-day average).
According to the agency’s COVID-19 vaccine data tracker, 76.4% of the Kansas population has received their first dose of the vaccine, 65.5% received their second dose and 16.7% received the bivalent dose. Sedgwick County has a 13% bivalent booster rate, as of April 20.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment reports 730 new cases in the state reported between April 12 and 19. Additionally, the department reported five new deaths.
Three Kansas counties are at the state department’s high incident rate and seven are at medium.
Ness, Rooks and Jewell counties are all at the high level, experiencing 100 or more cases per a population of 100,000 individuals. Thomas, Sheridan, Washington, Harvey, Labette, Linn and Atchison are at the medium level, seeing 50 to 99 cases per 100,000 people.
Sedgwick County is at the department’s moderate rate, experiencing an incident rate of 19.6 cases per 100,000 in population.
The Sedgwick County health department reports the county is at a 5% positive test rate, about 1% lower than this time last week. The rate accounts for the 14-day average of recorded positives over the total number administered and does not include at-home tests and those not reported to the health department.
The county reported 52 positive tests in the last seven days, according to its dashboard, which was the same number reported last week. The most reported in a single day was 16 cases April 14. The least recorded in one day was three cases April 16.
