A seventh child in Kansas has died from COVID-19, state health officials say

A seventh child in Kansas has died from COVID-19, health officials said Thursday.

The child was in the 0 to 9 age group, said Matt Lara, a spokesman for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

The death was added to the state’s data on Wednesday.

Four children in the 0 to 9 age group and three youth in the 10 to 17 age range have died from the virus.

A total of 7,290 people have died from the coronavirus in Kansas since the start of the pandemic. Their ages range from 0 to 107, according to KDHE.

Cases have risen in recent weeks as the highly contagious omicron variant spreads. The monthly positivity rate in Kansas was 29.9%.

Health officials in Johnson and Wyandotte counties on Thursday urged people to get vaccinated and boosted during a briefing hosted by the University of Kansas Health System.

“I think with all the data we have, we know these vaccines are very safe and very effective,” said Wyandotte County health officer Dr. Allen Greiner.

“To lose people to this disease is sad and it’s impactful for everybody.”
