Johnson County expands COVID testing with a new site and extended hours

Despite the frigid temperatures, COVID-19 testing was underway at 7820 Prospect Ave., where McKayla Lee, nursing student at Missouri Southern State University, swabbed a client Friday, Jan. 7, 2022, during the drive-through clinic at the Heavy Construction Laborers parking lot in Kansas City. Thursday’s testing clinic was closed because of the extreme cold.

Johnson County officials are working to expand COVID-19 testing capacity by adding a new testing location in Shawnee Mission Park. The county will also expand the hours of two existing testing sites run by the county’s Department of Health and Environment, officials announced on Thursday, Jan. 13.

The decision comes as COVID-19 infections surge in the Kansas City area. Here’s what we know about the upcoming changes.

Expanded hours

JCDHE has two other mass testing locations in the county: Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, and the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood.

Both of these sites are currently open on Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m, but will soon expand their hours to include Saturdays and be open from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. This change was announced by county officials on Thursday, Jan. 13. We’ll update this story once the new hours go into effect.

New testing site coming

Location: Shawnee Mission Park

Opening date: “That probably will launch next week sometime,” said Charlie Hunt, director-at-large of the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment on Thursday, Jan 13.

Hours: Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Availability: “The Shawnee Mission Park site will be by appointment only, which is different from the other two sites,” said Hunt.
