As COVID-19 cases surge around Kansas City and home tests and appointments at local testing facilities are hard to find, those with cash to spare have a special opportunity to get their hands on highly accurate PCR tests on Friday, Dec. 31. And, there’s an opportunity for more free tests in the first week of January.

MyHomeLabs, a medical supply company connected to 4M Healthcare in Overland Park, is selling PCR tests to the public for $100 a piece. The organization will then give away tests for free on Tuesday, Jan. 4, before returning to the full $100 price the following day.

Jerred Mann, CEO and co-founder of MyHomeLabs, told The Star that the company was planning to start providing tests to individuals in January, but moved up their plan to meet the need before New Year’s.

Here’s what we know about this special offer.

What are these tests?

MyHomeLabs is offering PCR tests with same-day results.

When can you get them?

You can get the tests on Friday, Dec. 31 from 8 a.m. to noon at the company’s drive-up location in Overland Park at 15112 Glenwood. You’ll have to call 1-800-484-2712 ahead of time to let them know you’re there.

You can also purchase the tests online here.

In the first week of January, drive-up tests will be available at the same location from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday Jan. 4 through Thursday Jan. 6.

How much do the tests cost?

On Dec. 31, Jan. 5 and Jan. 6, the tests will cost $100.

On Tuesday, Jan. 4 only, the tests will be free.

There’s no limit to how many tests you can purchase.

Anything else to know?

There are other free testing options around Kansas City, but the demand is high.

Call your local pharmacy before visiting to purchase a home test. At this time, Missouri is no longer offering to mail tests to residents for free. We’ll let you know if and when this program restarts.

Our recently updated guide to testing sites lists a number of locations around the metro area where you may be able to get tested. Be sure to call your chosen location before visiting to see if it’s closed for the New Year’s holiday weekend.
