Sixth Kansas child dies of COVID-19, according to data from health agency
A sixth Kansas child has died after falling ill from COVID-19, according to the state’s health agency.
The latest report from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment shows the child was somewhere between infancy and 9 years old. Of the Kansas children who have died, two others were from that same age group, and the other three ranged from ages 10 to 17.
It was not immediately clear exactly when or where the death occurred. Matthew Lara, an agency spokesman, said the child died earlier in November, and the death was recorded to KDHE’s public health dashboard on Friday. No other details were immediately available.
According to the public health dashboard, the virus has led to 6,618 deaths across the state since the pandemic began.
News of the latest child death comes as cases have again begun to rise in the Kansas City metro. As of Tuesday, the 7-day rolling average of new cases was 267 compared with 228 the week prior. The numbers are still lower than last month, when the 7-day average was 296.
The Star’s data tracks Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas.
The Star’s Robert A. Cronkleton contributed to this report.
