Kansas City metro adds more than 250 new COVID-19 cases and one death on Wednesday

The Kansas City metropolitan area added more than 250 new COVID-19 cases and one death on Wednesday.

The area encompassing Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas gained 256 cases for a total of 39,830 to date.

The seven-day positive test rate was 12.36% in Kansas City, 9.17% in Jackson County, 10.58% in Clay County and 13.95% in Platte County, according to data from the state of Missouri.

The 14-day positive test rate was 12.1% in Johnson County while the overall rate in Wyandotte County was 17.3%.

The seven-day rolling average for new cases in the metro was 340. One week ago, it was 319. Two weeks ago, it was 279.

One new death was reported in Johnson County, raising the area’s total to 572, according to data maintained by The Star.

The University of Kansas Health System reported 31 patients hospitalized for the virus, up three from Tuesday. Of the 31, eight were in the intensive care unit.

On Wednesday, Missouri reported 126,113 cases including 2,118 deaths. The seven-day positive test rate was 13.6%.

On Monday and Tuesday, the state’s new COVID-19 dashboards inaccurately depicted Kansas City’s number of cases. The Department of Health and Senior Services said some cases had been assigned to surrounding counties instead of Kansas City proper. However, the data was fixed Wednesday.

Kansas confirmed 59,749 cases including 678 deaths. The monthly positive test rate was 7.3%.

Across the country, more than 7.2 million people have contracted the virus and 206,615 have died, according to Johns Hopkins University.
