KC metro reports one coronavirus death and 290 additional positive tests Sunday

Another Kansas City metro resident has died of the coronavirus and another 290 have been infected, health officials reported Sunday.

To date, the virus has infected 36,650 residents, killing 507, across the region that encompasses Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas.

The seven-day rolling average of new infections in the metro was 307 as of Sunday, according to data maintained by The Star. Last week it was 262; two weeks ago, it was 317.

Earlier this week, health officials reported an additional 456 more infections Friday, the largest single day increase since 474 new cases were recorded Aug. 26.

The additional death reported Sunday was in Jackson County, bringing the death toll there to 80. To date, 7,064 residents living in parts of the county outside of Kansas City have tested positive for the virus.

In Kansas City, the virus has infected 10,545 residents, including 103 who have died.

Johnson County continues to outpace other parts of the region in its total number of virus-related deaths, with 141. Health officials have reported 10,106 positive test results there.

Wyandotte County has seen 6,580 residents become infected. To date, 133 have died.

There have been 1,724 cases and 40 deaths to date in Clay County. In Platte County, 631 people have been infected and 10 have died.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services’ COVID-19 data for Jackson, Clay and Platte counties does not include the cases discovered within Kansas City’s city limits.

Throughout Missouri, 112,844 residents have been infected, including 1,795 who have died. The state’s overall positive test rate was 9%.

When Kansas last reported its data Friday, there had been 52,285 cases, including 596 deaths. The positive test rate was 7.5%.

Nationwide, the virus has infected more than 6.7 million people, killing more than 199,400, according to Johns Hopkins University.
