Kansas City metro adds nearly 350 new COVID-19 cases and one death on Friday

The Kansas City metropolitan area added nearly 350 new COVID-19 cases and one more death on Friday.

The area encompassing Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas gained 347 cases for a total of 33,904 to date.

Kansas City added 94 of the new cases, pushing it past 10,000 total cases. Jackson County added 81, Clay County added 20, Platte County added eight, Johnson County added 110 and Wyandotte County added 34.

The seven-day rolling average for new cases is 277. One week ago, it was 317. Two weeks ago, it was 378.

The recent death was in Wyandotte County, raising the metro’s total to 468.

Doctors at the University of Kansas Health System said they had 22 patients hospitalized for the virus, the same number as Thursday.

Steve Stites, chief medical officer at the health system, said people of all ages need to take the virus seriously.

New research shows that the death rate among those age 18 to 35 who were hospitalized was 2.8%. Another 3% had to go to long care facilities to treat chronic heart and lung issues from the virus, Stites said.

On Friday, Missouri reported 97,591 cases to date, including 1,691 deaths. The seven-day positive test rate was 12.7%. The overall rate was 8.8%.

Kansas confirmed 48,386 cases, including 511 deaths. The overall positive test rate was 10.8%.

Across the U.S., more than 6.4 million people have contracted the virus and 192,448 have died, according to Johns Hopkins University.
