After Missouri finds unreported COVID-19 deaths, over 30 added in Kansas City metro
After the state of Missouri announced the discovery of previously unreported coronavirus related deaths Saturday, the Kansas City metropolitan area recorded 31 new deaths and 405 new cases of the rapidly spreading virus.
The area encompassing Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas has recorded a total of 32,307 cases of COVID-19.
The seven-day rolling average of new cases in the metro is 314. Last week it was 348. Two weeks ago, it was 363.
A total of 447 people have died in the metro area.
The state of Missouri reported 77 new deaths Saturday. According to a news release from the state’s department of health, 72 of those deaths actually occurred between June and August.
The deaths were recorded, the release said, after an inconsistency was found between death certificates and the state’s disease surveillance program. The department expects more new deaths to be reported Sunday.
Thirty of the 31 new deaths reported the metro area were in Missouri. One new death was reported in Johnson County.
On Saturday, Missouri listed 92,202 cases, including 1,639 deaths.
The positive test rate was 13.3%.
When Kansas last reported case numbers on Friday, the state had 45,220 cases, including 481 deaths.
The positive test rate was 10.6%.
Nationwide, the virus has infected more than 6.2 million people, killing more than 188,000, according to Johns Hopkins University.
