Three deaths reported as Kansas City metro adds more than 300 new COVID-19 cases
Three more deaths were reported Thursday in the Kansas City metropolitan area, which gained more than 300 new COVID-19 cases.
Two of the deaths were in Wyandotte County and one was in Jackson County, raising the metro’s total to 412 to date.
The area encompassing Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas gained 314 cases for a total of 31,701 to date.
The seven-day average for new daily cases is 338. One week ago, it was 369. Two weeks ago, it was 342. One month ago, it was 472.
Doctors at the University of Kansas Health System said they had 23 patients hospitalized for the virus, the same number as Wednesday. Six patients are in the intensive care unit.
“Our numbers have come down the last week, 10 days, and that’s good because we are going into a holiday weekend,” said Dana Hawkinson, medical director of infection prevention and control at the health system.
On Thursday, Missouri reported 88,610 cases to date, including 1,545 deaths. The seven-day positive test rate was 12.9%. The overall rate was 8.7%.
Kansas has confirmed 43,940 cases, including 458 deaths. The overall positive test rate was 10.5%.
Across the country, more than 6.1 million people have contracted the virus and more than 186,000 have died, according to Johns Hopkins University.
