Kansas City metro exceeds 30,000 coronavirus cases Saturday; 4 more deaths reported

The Kansas City metropolitan area added 424 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, bringing the total number of people infected with the virus to more than 30,000. Four more people have died.

This is the fourth day in a row that more than 400 new cases were reported in the metro area, encompassing Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas.

To date, 30,172 residents of the metro area have been diagnosed with the virus.

Three of the four additional deaths reported Saturday across the metro were Kansas City residents. The other was from Clay County. In total, 400 people in the Kansas City metro have now died of the virus.

The largest daily increase in the number of cases Saturday came from Johnson County, which added 178 cases, and Kansas City, which added 114.

The seven day rolling average for new cases in the metro sits at 348. One week ago, it was 363. Two weeks ago, it was 422.

On Saturday, Missouri reported 82,190 cases including 1,496 deaths. The seven day positive test rate was 12.2%.

Kansas, which last updated its numbers Friday morning, has at least 41,048 cases including 443 deaths. The overall positive test rate was 10.2%.

Across the country, more than 5.9 million people have contracted the virus and more than 182,000 have died, according to Johns Hopkins University. Globally, more than 24.8 million people have tested positive for the virus and almost 839,000 have died.
