Kansas City metro adds more than 200 new COVID-19 cases as daily average decreases

The Kansas City metropolitan area added more than 200 new COVID-19 cases and three more deaths on Tuesday.

The area encompassing Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas gained 206 new cases for a total of 28,435 to date.

The seven day rolling average for new cases was 336. One week ago, it was 397. Two weeks ago, it was 345. On Aug. 1, it was 474.

The average has been on the decline in the Kansas City area, said Dana Hawkinson, medical director of infection prevention and control at the University of Kansas Health System.

“We know those mask mandates work, in addition to the other interventions such as the distancing and the small group gatherings,” he said.

The University of Kansas Health System had 23 patients hospitalized for the virus Tuesday. Ten are in the intensive care unit.

Two of the metro’s recent deaths were in Jackson County and one was in Johnson County, raising the area’s total to 388.

On Tuesday, Missouri reported 76,636 cases including 1,440 deaths. The seven day positive test rate was 11.4%. The overall positive test rate was 8.2%.

Kansas updates its data on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The state has 38,401 confirmed cases including 426 deaths. The overall positive test rate was 9.9%.

Across the country, more than 5.7 million people have contracted the virus and 178,065 have died, according to Johns Hopkins University.
