The Kansas City metropolitan area added 128 new COVID-19 cases Wednesday and recorded one more death.

The area encompassing Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas has had a total of 5,949 cases, including 206 deaths.

The positive rate was 5.28% in Kansas City, 4.87% in Jackson County, 2.9% in Clay County, 3.7% in Johnson County and 15.5% in Wyandotte County. Platte County does not provide this figure.

The University of Kansas Health System said Wednesday they have 18 people hospitalized for COVID-19, a decrease of one patient compared to Tuesday.

“Unfortunately of those 18, six are in the ICU which is not surprising, but all six of those are needing ventilators,” said Dana Hawkinson, medical director of infection prevention and control at the health system.

The metro’s recent death was reported in Johnson County.

Missouri reported 16,625 cases including 524 people hospitalized on Wednesday and 909 deaths.
