Health officials report no new deaths, an additional 58 coronavirus cases in KC metro

An additional 58 new confirmed cases of the coronavirus were reported Sunday by health officials throughout the Kansas City metro.

The region — consisting of Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas — had recorded 199 deaths as of Sunday evening, up 12 since Monday.

That daily increase in cases was down Sunday compared to other recent days, though health officials have cautioned that fewer people are tested during weekends.

The metro recorded an additional 164 cases Tuesday, 129 on Wednesday, 133 Thursday, 90 Friday and 141 Saturday, according to data maintained by The Star.

In total, 4,975 residents have been infected by COVID-19 in the metro. That’s up from 4,179 a week before and 3,716 two weeks earlier.

On Sunday, The Star reported that a document containing “classified” Kansas public health information identified Lansing Correctional Facility as the largest single source of the state’s 10,393 cases, followed by the Tyson Foods meatpacking plant near Garden City.

Wyandotte County continues to outpace other counties in the Kansas City region in the number of coronavirus-related deaths, with 75 deaths and 1,496 cases.

Johnson County has seen the second-highest number of deaths in the area with 69 as of Sunday. Health officials there have confirmed 940 cases.

Kansas City recently surpassed Wyandotte County in the total number of cases, with 1,527 infections and 27 deaths. In Jackson County, 702 residents have been infected and 22 have died.

Clay County has reported 233 cases and four deaths. Platte County has seen 77 residents test positive and two die.

As of Sunday, Missouri reported 14,553 cases, resulting in 657 hospitalizations and 809 deaths.

Kansas recorded 10,393 cases, resulting in 917 hospitalizations and 232 deaths.

Nationwide, there have been 1,928,594 confirmed infections and 110,047 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.
