Kansas City metro adds more than 50 new COVID-19 cases Tuesday
More than 50 new COVID-19 cases were reported Tuesday in the Kansas City metropolitan area.
The area encompassing Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas has had a total of 3,833 cases, including 177 deaths.
The number of new cases has dipped slightly, with 82 reported Sunday, 63 on Monday and 54 on Tuesday.
Kansas City saw the largest increase in the metro Tuesday with 21 new cases. The city has a total of 1,071, the second most behind Wyandotte County, which has 1,272.
No new deaths were reported Tuesday.
Experts with the University of Kansas Health System encouraged people to continue practicing social distancing and avoid gathering in large groups.
“We want to be out, social with people, with our families. But there are ways to do that. We’ve said be outside is the best thing and social distance — not or — not be outside or social distance, but both of those things,” said Dana Hawkinson, director of infection prevention and control for the health system. “We know that COVID likes to find susceptible hosts. We know that it’s very easy to spread from one person to another when there are people close to each other.”
On Tuesday, Missouri reported 12,291 cases, including 686 deaths. A total of 179,943 tests, including viral and antibody tests, have been conducted.
Kansas has at least 9,218 cases, including 188 deaths. Another 72,181 tests have been negative.
Nationwide, more than 1.6 million people have contracted the coronavirus and more than 98,000 have died, according to Johns Hopkins University.
