New coronavirus cases in Kansas City metro jump by 69, biggest increase in 10 days
The Kansas City metropolitan area’s coronavirus count grew by 69 cases Wednesday.
That’s the largest jump the area — Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas — has seen in 10 days.
A total of 1,691 cases have been identified.
Wyandotte County accounted for more than half of the new cases with an additional 38, bringing its total to 471, the highest of any area within the metro.
Two more people died, one in Wyandotte County and one in Johnson County. The metro has recorded 103 deaths from COVID-19.
Steve Stites, chief medical officer at the University of Kansas Health System, said he hopes the trend of a flattened curve in the Kansas City area continues.
“People have done a great job on the sheltering in place, staying at home and six feet away, and all the infection control precautions we’ve talked about so much. I also think that our lower population density has helped,” Stites said. “I think the next big challenge for us will be as we explore reopening society, people getting back out there in public.”
In Kansas 2,211 cases have been reported, including 110 deaths, as of Wednesday afternoon. In Missouri, 6,137 cases have been reported, including 208 deaths.
Nationwide, more than 835,000 cases have been confirmed, according to Johns Hopkins University.
