Third Kansas corrections center has COVID-19 case with positive test at Topeka prison

A case of the new coronavirus has been identified at a third Kansas Department of Corrections facility.

A staff member at Topeka Correctional Facility has COVID-19, the department said Monday.

The facility is the state’s only prison for women.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Shawnee County Health Department conducted contact tracing to see who may have interacted with the employee.

On April 1, the Kansas Department of Corrections said three staff members at Lansing Correctional Facility had contracted the virus.

As of Monday, 47 staff members and 40 inmates at Lansing have tested positive.

A resident at the Wichita Work Release Facility tested positive on April 12, prompting him and 112 inmates to be moved to Lansing for medical isolation.

Last week, members of the Kansas National Guard were sent to Lansing to provide medical support, the department of corrections said.

Statewide, 1,986 coronvavirus cases have been reported and 100 people have died, as of Monday afternoon.
