Elmo has a dad? Yes, and he has a message for parents amid the coronavirus pandemic

COVID-19 is having an impact on “Sesame Street,” but Elmo’s dad, Louie, has kind words for parents who may be feeling stressed during the pandemic.

In a public service announcement, the elder fuzzy, red Muppet reminded parents that it’s OK to take a breather every now and again. The fast spreading virus, which has infected nearly 655,000 people nationwide and more than 2 million globally, has forced the closures of most schools and businesses in the U.S. and forced residents to stay at home.

With students now doing much of their learning at home, parents are spending more time than ever with their kids.

Louie agrees that this is a “wonderful” thing, but admits it “can also be a bit overwhelming.”

“I just wanted to say parents, you’re doing an amazing job,” he said in a lighthearted PSA released April 5. “Mhm. Remember though, it’s important to take some time for yourself. Take care of you.”

The elder Muppet proceeded to rattle off a number of fun activities, from whistling to your favorite tune to simply taking a “moment to breathe.” Louie was in the middle of his own quiet moment before being interrupted by pleas from his 3-year-old monster to come help him build a pillow fort.

“We are all doing the best we can,” he adds, “and that is OK. No no -- it’s better than OK.”

Louie’s son Elmo has long been a fan favorite Muppet on the children’s educational program, which debuted in November 1969. But Louie, a “saxophone-playing military veteran,” didn’t make an appearance until 2006 in the direct-to-video series “Sesame Beginnings,” according to Entertainment Weekly.

Elmo’s dad now enjoys recurring appearances on the famed PBS television show, the magazine reported.

Before rushing off to build a pillow fort, Louie concluded his PSA with a much-needed pep talk for parents.

“You hang in there, and keep up the good work!” he said.
