A dozen more coronavirus cases in Wyandotte County brings total reported to 161

A dozen more cases of the new coronavirus were reported Sunday in Wyandotte County, according to statistics updated by local public health officials.

The additional cases brought the county total to 161, up from 149 on Saturday. Unified Government officials recently noted the county measured a 191% increase over the course of a week and said the local population is especially vulnerable because of the prevalence of underlying chronic health problems and a lack of health insurance.

As of Sunday, 42 patients in the county have been hospitalized with COVID-19 and six have died.

Of 141 people using the health department’s self-reporting form, 52 were identified as likely being infected with the coronavirus.

The update comes after the Unified Government announced Friday that it would increase enforcement of existing stay-at-home orders. The county confirmed 19 cases among residents and staff at the Riverbend Post Acute Rehabilitation Center.

In Johnson County, where the most cases have been identified, officials confirmed 13 more Saturday, bringing the total there to 185.

Across the state, 699 coronavirus cases have been identified, including a Ford County patient labeled an out-of-state case and not included in the Kansas Department of Health and Environment total.
