Man who traveled on cruise ship is 4th person with coronavirus in Douglas County

Another person in Douglas County, Kansas, has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, bringing the number of confirmed cases in the county to four, officials said Sunday.

The patient, a man in his 50s, recently traveled on an international cruise ship, according to the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department. He has been in isolation since returning to Douglas County, the agency said.

Officials identified one person he was in close contact with. They were monitoring that person for fever and respiratory symptoms.

As of Sunday afternoon, there had been two deaths and 64 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Kansas — 28 in Johnson County and 14 in Wyandotte County. That was an increase statewide from 55 cases on Saturday.

Similar to Kansas City, Douglas County has prohibited the gatherings of 10 people or more and closed restaurants, theaters and bars. The University of Kansas also asked students on campus to move out.

The four cases in the county have involved patients who traveled to places where the virus had spread, health officials said.

News of the case came as officials in Kansas City and Wyandotte, Johnson and Jackson counties ordered residents to stay home starting 12:01 a.m. Tuesday to limit the virus’ spread.
