Kansas City police will stop some parking enforcement because of coronavirus
Fewer parking violations will be penalized in Kansas City while the state of emergency issued in response to the novel coronavirus pandemic is in effect, police announced Friday.
The Kansas City Police Department’s parking enforcement efforts will focus primarily on safety-related violations, the department posted on Twitter.
That will include ticketing or towing cars that are blocking intersections, driveways and fire hydrants as well as those illegally parked in a handicapped space.
Between 7-9 a.m. and 4-6 p.m., police said, the department will still ticket cars parked in rush hour traffic zones. Cars parked in time zones or at meters will not be ticketed.
“The decision was made after discussions about the totality of the circumstances and weighing that with the need to continue to provide for the public safety,” police spokesman Capt. David Jackson said.
He said the department had received negative feedback about parking enforcement recently but that they “rarely receive positive feedback regarding tickets at any time.”
The policy change will last for the duration of the city’s state of emergency, which is scheduled to continue through April 1.
