KC grocery stores and coronavirus: What you need to know about hours, safety measures

Grocery stores across the metro are tweaking their hours to give employees more time to stock shelves and do deep cleaning during the coronavirus pandemic.

Many stores also are giving at-risk customers special shopping hours.

Ball’s Food Stores, 27 area locations. Hen House Market (6 a.m.-8 p.m.), Pay Less Discount Foods (7 a.m.-8 p.m.), Ball’s Price Chopper (6 a.m.-8 p.m., except Wornall and Blue Ridge Blvd, open 7 a.m.) and Sun Fresh (7 a.m.-8 p.m.) stores will open at regular hours, with the first hour recommended for elderly and customers with disabilities to shop.

Cosentino’s Food Stores, which has the Cosentino Markets, as well as some Price Choppers, Apple Markets and Sun Fresh stores: 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. It is asking customers to reserve the first hour for seniors, expecting mothers and those with compromised immune systems.

Costco (Independence, Lenexa, Northland, Overland Park and midtown): 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday thru Friday; 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. A manager said some stores will start setting special shopping hours from 8 to 9 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays for at-risk groups.

Fareway Meat Market, Waldo. 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. 8 to 9 a.m. hours are reserved for those customers who are 65 and over, expecting mothers, those living with a serious chronic medical condition, and anyone with an underlying medical condition that increases the susceptibility to serious illness from COVID-19.

.Hen House Markets: All stores opening at the regular opening times but closing at 8 p.m. They recommend that older adults and those with health conditions shop during the first couple of hours after the store opens.

Hy-Vee: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. daily for people ages 60 and older, expectant mothers, and anyone with an underlying health condition that makes them more susceptible to serious illness.

Hy-Vee will no longer let customers bring reusable bags, and the chain is installing protective plastic barriers at each register to protect employees and customers.

Marsh’s Sun Fresh Market, Westport. Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Minit Mart, multiple metro locations. Now offering a free coffee to healthcare workers, first responders and military personnel when they inform the team member at checkout.

Target, multiple metro locations: Regular opening hours but closing no later than 9 p.m. daily. Any stores that regularly close earlier than 9 p.m. will continue to close at their normal time. It is reserving the first hour of shopping each Wednesday for elderly customers and those with underlying health concerns.

Trader Joe’s, Ward Parkway and Town Center Crossing in Leawood: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
