Independence mall to temporarily close amid coronavirus concerns; Legends cuts hours

Many retailers temporarily shut their doors this week amid rising concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now a shopping center has joined them.

Independence Center had already shortened its hours. Now, after it closes at 7 p.m. Thursday, it doesn’t plan to reopen until March 31. It posted a notice on its Facebook page saying the “safety and health of our guests, employees and community is always our top priority.” It will continue to be under 24/7 surveillance.

Other area malls, including Oak Park Mall, are still open but many of the shops are closed. Restaurants are to-go or delivery only.

Starting Friday, Legends Outlets hours will be 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.

At Ward Parkway Center, Smitty’s Garage Burgers & Beer and Charleston’s Restaurant temporarily shut down.

Half Price Books stores — in Independence, Olathe, Overland Park and Westport — have closed to walk-in traffic but have curbside pickup from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
