Kansas City Zoo to close temporarily as precaution against coronavirus
Add the Kansas City Zoo to the long list of attractions now shutting their gates, at least temporarily, as a precaution against the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19.
The zoo, which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year to Swope Park, typically remains open all but three days a year: Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.
Beginning Wednesday, March 18, it will be closed for 14 days until April 1. All educational programs and events, public and private, are canceled through April 1, the zoo announced.
The zoo is home to some 1,700 animals that need daily care. “We know that this is a difficult time for everyone but if you can, please consider a gift to our zoo to help us continue to provide amazing care,” the zoo’s website said.
The zoo does offer people the option of watching animals live on its animal cams.
A partial lists of other attractions that have closed for the time being include: Union Station’s Science City, the Planetarium, the Genghis Khan Exhibition and the Model Rail Gallery; The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art; The National World War I Museum; The American Jazz Museum, including the Blue Room and Gem Theater; The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art; The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art; Powell Gardens and The Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens.
