Let’s hope no one kicked in his TV on Thursday night, or tossed it out a window, when the Chiefs imploded against the Denver Broncos. Because chances are it was a big TV.

The bulky CRT screens that once dominated the market — but technically couldn’t be more than 40 inches diagonally — have been rapidly replaced by bigger and lighter flat screens using LCD, plasma or OLED technology. Tube TVs averaged 28 inches diagonally, but flat screens averaged 32 inches initially and have just kept getting bigger.

Last year, 63 percent of global TV sales were for screens 40 inches and larger, nearly double the 32 percent of sales in that category just five years earlier. Now, IHS Technology estimates the 40-plus-inch screens will be more than 80 percent of global TV sales by 2019.
