Can’t travel? Take these money-wise tips to ensure summer vacations aren’t a wash

I can say with all certainty this summer will be unique.

Before the COVID-19 outbreak, people were looking forward to the summer months. There was the usual excitement for the warmer weather, pool or lake time, baseball and maybe a vacation. But so much about our world has turned upside down.

Many people find themselves in a completely different financial situation than the one they started with in 2020. For some, summer plans have been canceled due to safety or monetary constraints.

This week I’m going to share ideas for holding onto a bit of that summer magic while staying safe. Safety protocols and social distancing are recommended in all cases.

Free or low-cost outings

In Kansas City, we have access to many free or low-cost treasures. Each pocket of town has something unique to experience, and you can take your pick of places to find affordable activities. A few of my favorite websites are KC Parent and Kansas City on the Cheap where you’ll find a published list of what’s currently open and available. I also suggest exploring nature trails outside of your nearby surroundings. Check out what’s available in another city on the opposite side of the metro area and take a break from the norm. Your family will love the adventure.

Attend a friend’s baseball game

We desperately miss seeing our boys in blue. Although the stadium experience is not easily replicated, many youth and adult leagues are back in action and playing again. Consider attending a friend or loved one’s game and make it an experience. Bring some popcorn and a cold drink along, and don’t forget to wear your favorite baseball gear. Not only will you enjoy the warm temperatures and the fun of the game-viewing experience, but you’ll also make someone’s day by coming and supporting.

Make a splash

Most of the local pools have closed, but it can’t be denied that making a splash is a quintessential part of summer. Many blow-up pools are in short supply due to high demand, but sprinkler connections are still readily available. Just hook up your hose and bring back the water fun of summer.

Although a great deal has changed, summer doesn’t have to be canceled. With these tips, you’ll be enjoying the sunshine again in no time.
