How to support each other in times of need

It’s safe to say these are unprecedented times during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many people are facing financial challenges, from furloughed jobs, to rollercoaster budget changes, to uncertain financial security moving forward. This week, I’m sharing my ideas for supporting others through the challenging months ahead:

Two birds, one stone

For those of you with young kiddos in the house, keeping enough groceries to feed hungry little bellies feels impossible. In addition to groceries, consider mixing in some safe carry-out orders at your favorite local restaurants.

The restaurant industry has been hit hard by the pandemic, and although carry-out is more expensive than cooking at home, you’ll be supporting a local business while treating your family to a delicious meal. To further expand your support, use a delivery service like DoorDash and consider a larger tip to support drivers who may be looking to supplement their income during this time. Be sure to request that your driver wear a mask and glove for your protection, and make sure you wash your hands and properly dispose of all food containers before enjoying your meal.

Stock up on gift cards

If you are in a financial position to do so, stocking up on gift cards is another way you can support local businesses! These can be used for future gifting throughout the year, while offering support now when companies need the funds. This can be anything from restaurants, to boutiques, to salons and spas. Some local companies have also rolled out new branded T-shirts or merchandise so you can show your support in two ways: buying some swag and sporting it.

Donations

Although some non-profits have halted certain donations for safety reasons (clothing for example), many are still accepting donations across the city. Food donations are still in high demand at food pantries like Harvesters and organizations like VCP have posted a wish list for essentials. Could your favorite charity use donations? Just be sure to review the intake details for organizations you’d like to support, as some have modified safety protocols at this time.

Helping others during this crisis is one of the many ways we can come together during this time. That said, if you’re needing support yourself, there are options for you. Contact your financial institution to learn more about how they may be able to assist you. Or, you can access a variety of community resources that may be available to you.
