Johnson County burger restaurant is closing after nearly 16 years
Five Guys — a Virginia-based burger chain with locations across the country — is closing a nearly 16-year-old Kansas City-area spot.
Its Oak Park Mall restaurant, 11331 W. 95th St. in Overland Park, will serve its last meal July 15.
Signs posted outside the restaurant Monday announced the closing date, along with a thank you note to customers.
“We are incredibly thankful for our customers and amazing community,” the signs read.
They directed customers to area locations: 9133 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park and 11900 Shawnee Mission Park in Shawnee.
The fast food chain currently has 16 locations in the metro.
Christine Poehling, spokeswoman for Oak Park Mall owner CBL Properties, told The Star via email that a new restaurant tenant will move in soon. She said the tenant will be announced in the middle of the month.
Five Guys did not respond to The Star’s requests for comment Monday.
The original Five Guys opened in Arlington, Virginia, in 1986. It now has more than 1,900 restaurants, according to its website. However, the company has quietly closed at least 14 other stores this year, a May article from industry publication Fast Company stated.
As a privately owned company, Five Guys does not regularly release earning reports.
The Oak Park Mall location opened in November 2010, according to previous reporting from The Star.
