Local family restaurant chain takes over space of Waldo brunch spot in KC
A local family restaurant chain has taken over the space of a Waldo breakfast and lunch spot.
Pegah’s Family Restaurant, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, took over the space of Waldo Cafe at 7531 Wornall Road and signed the lease Wednesday, according to Pegah’s owner Moe Sharifi.
Sharifi said he had learned the space would be available in June and met with an architect Wednesday about the plan to remodel the space. He hopes to open in September.
“Waldo is a great place to live ... and there’s no breakfast place really around Waldo, so we don’t have any competition either, so we decided to come over, and I think it’s a good location,” Sharifi said.
The Star went Wednesday and saw a sign posted outside Waldo Cafe saying it would be closed Tuesday for a kitchen renovation. Several would-be customers attempted to open the doors. Another sign nearby said it planned to be closed for the Fourth of July.
The Star attempted to call the cafe but got no response.
A post on Facebook from a Waldo Cafe employee Wednesday said she was told by the owner about the closure.
“Yesterday I received a call from the owner of Waldo Cafe, and was told that the restaurant has been sold and doors are closed. I do not know all the details of this, and don’t want to say much more until I’m sure of things,” the post said. :What I do know is our whole staff just loss their jobs and income overnight. To say this sucks is an understatement. Unfortunately in this industry it happens.”
Pegah’s has been open for 39 years and currently has five locations including in Lee’s Summit, Lenexa, Shawnee, west Shawnee and Kansas City. This would be the sixth. It serves a wide variety of homemade comfort food like waffles, eggs, skillets, hash browns and items like burgers, wraps, salads and fajitas for lunch and dinner.
“We do homemade food, we make our own mashed potato, our own dinner roll,” Sharifi said, adding that nothing there is preheated. “We have over 100 items in our menu, from the salad to the skillets to the all the griddle dinner, appetizers.”
Sharifi highlighted the gravy, cinnamon roll and skillet dishes for breakfast. The steak omelette is his personal favorite.
“You name it, we have it,” he said. “People can come in and expect to get the food fast, 10 minutes, we can get the plate out of the kitchen and so we very proud of our food, and people really like our food. For 39 years we made it happen.”
The new Pegah’s location aims to open this September and will share the same hours as the other locations, every day from 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
