New bar coming to KC’s Westport. It’ll offer games, nightlife experience
Nearly 10 years ago, those who frequented the Bricktown District in Oklahoma City kept telling DJ Daniel Rockwell: “I wish there was something pretty here.”
Rockwell, who lives in OKC and loves to throw a party, agreed. His solution was Pretty Please Social Room, a spot with bar games, drinks and late hours.
After meeting his girlfriend while DJing in Kansas City, she persuaded him to open a second location. But put this one in Westport, pretty please.
Her wish was his command. The spot will open at 4141 Mill St. in the coming months, though Rockwell didn’t specify a date. He said he’s waiting for the city to complete the zoning process.
“I just grew a fondness and a love for this city and really wanted to try to bring the concept here,” Rockwell said.
The KC location will be similar to the one in OKC. It’ll have cornhole, Jenga and card games.
During the day, it’ll offer a more intimate atmosphere to enjoy conversation and drinks. After a certain hour, the music will turn up and the dance floor will open.
“It’ll definitely have some nightlife to it where people can dance, but still be able to do some of the fun bar games that they like and enjoy,” Rockwell said.
Pretty Please Social Room will have a patio once the Mill Street improvement project is completed.
He hopes his space will match Westport’s historic, once-industrial look.
“We kind of made a conscious effort to fit the aesthetic to the overall district’s vibe,” Rockwell said.
He’s still ironing out the menu. But there will be beer, wine, cocktails and small plates.
“It’s a great date night place,” he said. “The husbands will play beer pong while the girlfriends are on the dance floor, dancing and stuff.”
Rockwell has always enjoyed entertaining. As a DJ, he knows how to turn up the energy and get people moving around. He thinks his OKC spot has done just that, and he hopes to bottle some of the energy and bring it to Westport.
“That love and passion kind of motivated my love and passion and my want to do something on that level,” he said. “Be a part of ownership. Create that party. Create that kind of enjoyable experience.”
Last year, Grinning Bull BBQ KC announced that it would open in the space. Owner Kevin Bulgerin said he decided to “go a different direction” and would no longer be opening there.
