Former Johnson County chocolate shop to become hand roll sushi bar

After Andre’s bemoaned exit in Overland Park, a popular sushi restaurant will take over the former chocolate shop’s space.

Kata Nori Hand Roll Bar will move into Hawthorne Plaza at 4929 W. 119th St. and open sometime this summer.

Owners Kyung Kim and Nam Phan, along with head chef Anh Pham, first opened the sushi concept in the Crossroads two years ago at 404 E. 18th St. Kata Nori specializes in temaki, in which the sushi chef fills a sheet of seaweed with fish, vegetables and rice, rolls it up, and then passes it over the counter to the customer.

“The seaweed is crispy, the rice is warm, and the fish is cool,” Phan told The Star in a previous interview. “And that combination makes for a different kind of sushi experience.”

The Johnson County restaurant will serve familiar menu favorites at a similar U-shaped sushi bar. Table service and a full cocktail bar will also be available.

A release from the restaurant teased “a few new menu items.”

Hand rolls listed on Kata Nori’s menu includes hamachi (yellowtail), kani (blue crab), wagyu and spicy tuna.

Cocktails include a cucumber saketini, lychee martini, tsurai margarita and yuzu whisky sour.

The Hamachi crudo at Kata Nori is yellowtail cured and cold smoked with Japanese apple wood, topped with blood orange, fresh serrano and pickled shallots.

Andre’s Confiserie Suisse — a chocolate shop and restaurant — closed its Hawthorne Plaza location at the end of 2025 after 23 years in Johnson County.

Owners Brigitte and Kevin Gravino had been serving the community at that spot for just as long and decided to retire. Thankfully, the Andre’s brand isn’t going anywhere. The Kansas City location at 5018 Main St. remains open, and it still sells its Swiss confections online and wholesale to various retailers around the metro.
