Kansas City taqueria location of two years closes. ‘Incredibly grateful’
Barrio Taqueria — part of a local Mexican-style restaurant and bar chain — has closed in midtown.
The restaurant announced the closure of the 408 E. 31st St. space via social media about a week ago. The post included several photos as a tribute to 2025.
“We’re incredibly grateful for everyone who supported that space — the memories made will always be a part of our story,” the post reads. “We’re excited to carry that energy onto what’s next!”
The doors are locked and lights are off inside the space. It’s marked as “permanently closed” online.
Barrio could not be reached for comment.
In 2023, the former Sol Cantina space reopened as Barrio Taqueria. The revamped version of Barrio Mexican Kitchen + Bar was a taco-centric version with some shared menu items.
Barrio’s first location opened in the Red Bridge shopping center in 2017, called Red Bridge Barrio.
Today, the restaurant group also has locations in Brookside and Briarcliff (in the Northland).
Barrio owners Chris Ridler and Luke Pickett also owned Sol Cantina, which had been open since 2006.
