Kansas City’s first bar focused on women’s sports is opening. See inside

For the first time in Kansas City’s history, a bar centered on women’s sports is about to open.

While the metro has no shortage of places to catch big games, this is the first in the area that will prioritize women’s games.

The KC Current, WNBA, and other pro and collegiate women’s sports will take center stage on the screens at The Dub, 107 W. Ninth St. downtown (Banksia’s former space) .

While women’s sports will be the focus, men’s games will sometimes be shown as well. (That’s to say, if the Chiefs are playing in the Super Bowl , it’ll be on.)

“We are so excited, it’s been a year-and-a-half in the making,” owner Monica Brady said. “We are just thrilled we are going to be open to the public … and really just start building this community that we’re trying to create.”

She and her partner in life and business, Rachel Glenn, are Omaha transplants who soft-opened the bar this week. There will be a grand opening Thursday, Oct. 16.

Both have a love for sports and hope to make the bar a welcoming space for the entire community.

The space is bedecked with teal and orange accents and murals of women swinging golf clubs, hitting racquets and shooting layups. Its exposed brick and white walls give it a different feel than other sports bars.

“It feels light and bright and airy,” Brady said. “It’s not your ‘typical sports bar’ that feels heavy and covered in wood and dark corners. It’s pretty much the opposite of that.”

The Dub features about a dozen cocktails: a spicy margarita, its take on a Manhattan, and cocktails paying homage to different gay bars throughout the city’s history.

On the food menu: sheet pan nachos, cucumber sandwiches and a chicken pesto sandwich.

While The Dub is a Kansas City first, it’s far from the only women’s sports bar in the country. Brady said there are women’s sports bars in 17 states, including The 99ers in Denver, Title 9 Sports Grill in Phoenix and The Sports Bra in Portland.

Many of those have only recently opened, according to NBC News, who reported that the number of women’s sports bars would grow from six to two dozen in a single year.

“It’s definitely a movement that we’re excited to be a part of,” Brady said.
