Kansas City area Hispanic grocery store opens its biggest location yet
El Mercado Fresco, the Kansas City area’s Hispanic grocery store chain, has opened its newest location.
The new spot at 7549 State Ave. in Kansas City, Kansas, is the ninth in the metro. While it sells many of the same products as the other locations, owner Eddie Musallet said this is the biggest spot yet.
The store — which has a bakery, made-to-order food counter, butcher section and more — is 35,000 square feet. That’s 10,000 to 15,000 more than its other locations, Musallet said.
El Mercado Fresco moved into the former Big Lots spot a few weeks ago.
Since then, Musallet said he’s been pulling in customers from KCK, Bonner Springs and even Leavenworth. There aren’t as many Hispanic grocery stores that far west.
“It’s good to serve that community over there,” he said. “That area over there needed lower prices.”
The store carries a variety of well-known Hispanic brands, including Bimbo, Klass, Marinela, Jumex and Goya.
Mussalet’s other locations include 2102 Metropolitan Ave. in Kansas City, Kansas, and one that opened a few months ago at 6599 N. Oak Trafficway in Gladstone.
Last year, he opened a global grocery store called World Fresh Market at 10303 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park. It took over an old Walmart Neighborhood Market.
