After three decades, a Johnson County Price Chopper is closing.

The spot at 7000 W. 75th St. in Overland Park is closing Aug. 19, employees at the store told The Star.

The spot is owned by Balls Foods Stores. Neither Balls nor Price Chopper responded to The Star’s requests for comment.

Balls owns 13 of the more than 50 area Price Choppers. In September, the company announced that it would transfer ownership of its stores to its employees.

Price Chopper has another location nearby at 8686 Antioch Road in Overland Park.

The Johnson County spot is the second KC area grocery store to close in the past few weeks. In early July, The Merc Co+op announced it would close its location of five years at 501 Minnesota Ave. in Kansas City, Kansas.

The Merc Co+op is winding down at the end of the year, a spokeswoman with the company said.

“It’s a challenging time,” Laura Marsh said of the community-owned grocer.

Meanwhile, The Sun Fresh at Linwood, 3110 Wabash Ave., continues to struggle with safety concerns and funding despite millions of dollars of investment from Kansas City.

Pictures of its bare shelves have been widely circulated online and in news articles, including a July 18 story from The Washington Post.

The 75th and Metcalf Avenue Price Chopper opened in 1995. A Radio Shack and Blockbuster opened in the same area months after, according to a Star article at the time.

Price Chopper has been in the area for more than 40 years, its website says.
