After more than a year and a half of anticipation, Overland Park will finally get its first sip of 151 Coffee.

The Dallas-based coffee chain is unveiling its first location in the metro at 9180 Metcalf Ave. next week. Michael Wattles, vice president of finance for the company, said it plans to open July 18 at the latest.

The spot was announced in October 2023 and scheduled to open in January 2024, but repeated construction hiccups delayed the drive-thru from serving its specialty espresso drinks.

Now, the coffee shop is ready to be the metro’s newest drive-thru coffee chain. On Friday, the new location hosted a hiring event for prospective baristas.

Hoping to rival such metro chains like 7 Brew, Scooter’s and Dutch Bros, 151 Coffee sells energy drinks, refreshers, smoothies and coffee drinks.

A few of its coffee flavors include the Snickers latte (hazelnut, caramel and mocha made with chocolate milk) and the cinnamon dulce latte (brown sugar cinnamon and caramel).

Milk in hot drinks is steamed to exactly 151 degrees, just like its name.

At one point, 151 Coffee had filed paperwork to open another spot at 12005 Metcalf Ave., in a former Boston Market. Wattles declined to comment on the status of that location.

151 Coffee has more than a dozen locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, as well as one out-of-state location in Manhattan, Kansas.

The Overland park spot will be its second venture outside of the Lone Star State.

Last year, Iowa-based coffee and energy drink concept Hyper Energy Bar announced it would open several locations in the metro, including one in Overland Park at 95th Street and Nieman Road.
