A Kansas City hub for delivery and takeout food has quietly closed
Crossroads Food Stop, a Kansas City virtual food hall and ghost kitchen hub that once hosted over a dozen restaurant concepts under one roof, has quietly shuttered after less than two years in operation.
City records filed this month show that its vendors’ licenses have been suspended due to inactivity. The windows of the building at 1600 Campbell St. are blacked out, and its website lists no longer lists any restaurants.
Opened in October 2022, the facility was part of a national network of ghost kitchens operated by CloudKitchens, a company known for providing takeout- and delivery-only kitchen spaces for restaurateurs looking to expand without traditional storefronts.
The KC location featured 22 kitchen spaces and the ability for vendors to operate multiple brands from a single unit. Customers could place orders through on-site touchscreen kiosks, the company’s online platform or third-party apps like DoorDash.
At its peak, Crossroads Food Stop housed about 15 restaurant brands, including Waldo Pizza, Oscar’s Authentic Mexican Grill, Wok & Roll KC, El Pulgarcito Salvadoran Express and Raj Express Indian Kitchen.
“We were the first ones to sign a lease,” said Bijenbra Rana, owner of Raj Express. “But by the time we left in February, it was just us and Oscar’s still operating.”
An employee at Oscar’s Authentic Mexican Grill confirmed they are no longer operating at the location either.
Rana said monthly rent was in the range of $6,000 to $7,000, while delivery platforms like DoorDash took nearly 30% in commissions per order.
“Customers weren’t coming in or using the Food Stop website — they were almost all ordering through DoorDash,” he said. “So you make less money. After rent and the third-party delivery fees, there was almost nothing left.”
Rana said Raj Express will soon open a new restaurant at 5621 W. 135th St., Suite 2610, at Prairiefire in Overland Park.
CloudKitchens, Crossroads Food Stop’s parent company, did not respond to requests for comment. The company was founded in 2016 and later acquired by Uber cofounder Travis Kalanick. It reportedly owns more than 400 cloud kitchens in 110 cities across the globe.
