KC breakfast-centric restaurant opens first drive-thru location. More could be coming
Pegah’s Family Restaurant has been a sit-down restaurant in the Kansas City area since it first opened in Shawnee in 1987.
But times are changing, and quick-service restaurants are on the rise.
So owner Moe Sharifi — who took over in 2013 — decided it was about time Pegah’s opened its own spot with a drive-thru.
Pegah’s Cafe & Coffee opened Monday at 13109 Holmes Road in Martin City. Sharifi said it might not be the last drive-thru Pegah’s opens, if all goes well.
It moved into the former P.S. Coffee location. Before that, Martin City Coffee operated across the street for four years.
“I always had in my mind to do a coffee shop and a place with a (drive-thru) window …” Sharifi said. “I figured I’d be able to give them good food and good coffee.”
The restaurant also has some inside and patio seating, and customers can order their food for dine-in or takeout at the counter.
Pegah’s is known for its breakfast options, though it also serves lunch and dinner. For Pegah’s Cafe & Coffee, it serves many of the same items found at its other restaurants, though it’s added a few things.
The avocado toast, for example, is new. Sharifi also said he upgraded Pegah’s salad menu — the new Martin City salad is mixed greens tossed in cranberry vinaigrette, cranberries, Granny Smith apples, candied walnuts, gorgonzola and red onions.
Some other menu items include the Very Berry Toast (whipped mascarpone, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, almonds and honey on toast for $7.50), the KC Steak Bowl (breakfast potatoes served with two eggs scrambled overeasy and topped with steak, peppers, green onions, cheese and salsa for $14), and el jefe burrito (scrambled eggs with chorizo, onions, peppers, jalapenos and cheese for $12).
The drive-thru has a full coffee and espresso menu, with 20-ounce iced lattes for $5.40. (Sharifi said that his coffee prices are lower than competitors. Starbucks sells a plain 16-ounce iced latte for $5.45.)
Flavors are an additional 75 cents and include vanilla, hazelnut, mocha, lavender and other options.
Pegah’s other locations are at 11005 Johnson Drive in Shawnee, 12122 W. 87th St. in Lenexa, 5354 Roberts St. in Shawnee, and 410 Route 291 in Lee’s Summit.
Its Merriam location, 8701 Shawnee Mission Parkway, closed in 2022 to make way for the Merriam Grand Station redevelopment.
