KC coffee shop, bakery closes. Crime and streetcar expansion contributed, owner says
Bakery and coffee shop Enchante is closed after just two years of serving customers.
Its 3934 Main St. location is shifting to a catering and wholesale focus, the bakery announced on its website.
Owner Heather White said she felt like it was the best decision “for now.” The streetcar construction right along Main Street has made it difficult for customers to access the business.
White said crime in midtown has made it even more difficult.
Her three businesses in the neighborhood — Enchante, Tailleur and Cheval — have been broken into 11 times over the past two years. Staff have been harassed or had their tips stolen on a weekly basis, White said.
“The burden has been entirely on us to deal with these issues, and it has made operating a safe and successful business impossible,” she told The Star in a written statement.
Tailleur (3933 Main St.) and Cheval (3940 Main St.) will remain open. French restaurant Tailleur has a large back parking lot, and Cheval serves as Tailleur’s overflow bar on busy nights, so the streetcar construction has had less of an effect on the two.
Enchante opened in January 2023, selling espresso drinks, cookies, brownies and more.
It will continue taking catering orders through its website at enchanteonmain.com.
