Johnson County bakery will close cafe after 7 years, but it’s not goodbye forever
Seven years ago, Deepal Patel opened The Pantry KC, a bakery and cafe in Lenexa.
In that time, especially in the last couple of years, Patel has seen her business flourish and grow. So much so that she’s outgrown her space at 7769 Quivira Road.
Now Patel is closing it March 9. But don’t worry, she assures her loyal customers, it’s not goodbye forever.
“Our goal now is to get our own place,” she said. “Otherwise, we’re just going to plateau at this point, because we’re maximized in every way we possibly can.”
Patel doesn’t have a timeline for when she’s hoping to find a new spot, or where it might be. She’s wanting to stick as close as possible to her current bakery, for the convenience of her customers.
In the interim, Patel won’t be baking.
“I kind of want to take my time, enjoy the build-out, make sure it’s really what I want and how I envision it,” she said.
Her current space is only open two days a week and has limited seating. She’s hopeful her new location will accommodate more people more often.
She plans to offer the same menu favorites when she returns: cookies, shortbread, cheesecake, and more. Patel, who grew up in Wales, also offers European treats like British mince pies and scones.
She looks forward to continuing to introduce Kansas City to authentic British treats — and whatever else the next chapter may bring.
“We’re kind of just here to see where this journey takes us,” she said. “We feel more confident and secure than we did when we first opened, so we’re just ready to see what this next phase is like.”
Until it closes, The Pantry is open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
