‘Numbers don’t lie’: Kansas City small-plates wine bar has closed after two years
The Northland small-plates restaurant Ombra has closed.
Owner Sarah Nelson told The Star she made the decision due to “a combination of decreasing sales and me coming to terms with the constraints of operating a full-service restaurant as a sole owner.” Ombra’s last day was Sept. 30.
“We had an amazing two years, but numbers don’t lie,” Nelson said. “When we opened, I had no intentions of running front-of-house operations, but eventually I ended up with that responsibility as well. The strain of wearing so many hats became too much to handle after a while.”
Nelson opened Ombra in 2022 at 4161 N. Mulberry Dr. in The Village at Briarcliff. She and her husband, Louis Guerrieri, had previously opened Sushi Mo! at Parlor in early 2020, right before the pandemic. They later relocated to the Iron District, closing Sushi Mo! in 2021 to focus on opening Ombra.
In late August, Nelson opened Carne Diem, an upscale meat market and seafood counter in the former GreenAcres Market, just down the road from Ombra at 4179 N. Mulberry Drive. Guerrieri serves as lead butcher.
Carne Diem will remain open. The market just received its liquor license and is planning a grand opening party Dec. 14.
A week later, on Dec. 21, Ombra is having a closeout sale of all its remaining wine and spirits. It’ll be held from noon to 4 p.m. in the restaurant’s former space.
