KC restaurant will close after 5 years: ‘The financial strain has proven insurmountable’
Soiree, the Southern-inspired restaurant in Kansas City’s 18th and Vine District, will close at the end of August.
“The lack of investors and ongoing economic pressures have left us with no choice but to close our doors,” chef Anita Moore announced Wednesday on Instagram. “This marks not the end of Soiree, but the beginning of a new chapter in our journey, wherever we may pop up next!”
Moore added that the restaurant will be running a limited menu with specials through the end of the month.
Moore opened Soiree in 2017 in Smithville, relocating to 1512 E. 18th St. in 2019. The restaurant was heavy on New Orleans-style fare — poboys, fried oysters, barbecue shrimp — and often hosted live jazz performances.
Soiree closed in 2020 during the pandemic but later reopened.
“Surviving the challenges of COVID-19 was no small feat, and we are deeply grateful for the unwavering support we received during those difficult times,” Moore wrote in her post Wednesday. “However, despite our best efforts to recover, the financial strain has proven insurmountable.”
A second Soiree opened at Kansas City International Airport’s new terminal in 2023. Moore told the Star Thursday that the airport location would remain open “for now.”
